The Canvas 3.5.5 Updater is a program that updates Canvas version 3.5.4 to version 3.5.5. Version 3.5.5 is compatible with Mac OS 8 system software. If you use Mac OS 8, you should update your installed copy of Canvas 3.5.4 to version 3.5.5.
The Canvas 3.5.5 Updater is contained in a compressed and encoded archive for downloading from Deneba over the Internet. After you download the archive, most web browsers will decode and decompress the archive for you. You can use Stuffit Expander to decompress and decode the archive file, if necessary.
After decoding and decompressing the archive file, you will have a folder containing the "Canvas™ 3.5.5 Updater" and a folder named "Tool," which contains the Canvas Pen Manager tool.
To use the Canvas 3.5.5 Updater
You can use the Canvas 3.5.5 Updater to update an installed and personalized version of Canvas 3.5.4 only. You cannot use this Updater to update earlier versions of Canvas, or versions that have not been personalized with a valid serial number.
Important: After you update to version 3.5.5, you will need to personalize Canvas and enter your user serial number the first time you launch the program. Be sure that you have a valid Canvas 3.5 serial number before you update your installed version of Canvas.
1. Turn off extensions before using the Updater. To do this, restart your computer and hold down the Shift key. Continue holding down the Shift key until the message "Welcome to Macintosh. Extensions off" appears.
2. Double-click the Canvas™ 3.5.5 Updater application icon. The Updater searches your hard disk for an installed version of Canvas 3.5.4. If it finds the application, it highlights the file in the top pane of the Canvas 3.5.5 Updater dialog box. Click Update to begin updating the installed application.
3. The Updater displays a message box showing you the progress of the update.
5. When the update is complete, a message tells you that the file has been successfully updated. Click OK to close the message box, and then click Quit in the Canvas 3.5.5 Updater dialog box.
Installing the new Pen Manager tool
After you run the Canvas 3.5.5 Updater to update the installed program, you need to install one new tool. The Pen Manager tool is in the Tool folder that is included with the Updater.
Copy the Pen Manager tool into the Canvas Tools folder on your hard disk to complete the update. When a message appears asking if you want to replace the older item, click OK.
Note: Canvas is likely to crash if you use Mac OS 8 but do not install the new Pen Manager tool.
*IMPORTANT*
After you update the Canvas program and external tools, you should rebuild your Desktop file. To do this, hold down the Command and Option keys while restarting your computer. When the dialog box asks if you want to rebuild your Desktop file, click OK.
